What causes a Cataract?
The most common type of Cataract is age-related. Age-related cataracts develop when the crystalline lens is less able to maintain its transparency. This type of cataracts are called Congenital Cataracts.

How do I find out if I have a Cataract?
If you think you may have developed a cataract, or you are at risk of developing a cataract, you should see an Ophthalmologist (eye doctor) for an eye examination. Your eye doctor will use a special slit lamp microscope to look into your eye to diagnose a cataract. Your eye doctor will advise you if you will benefit from have Cataract Surgery.

What should I expect if I wish to have Cataract Surgery?
If you wish to have Cataract Surgery, your doctor will perform a test to measure eye for the purpose of calculating the power of the Intra-Ocular Lens to be inserted into the eye (to replace the cataract). This test is called Biometry. Thereafter, our staff will help you to book a suitable timing for the surgery. You will need to arrange for about 4 to 5 days away from work, so that you have ample time to rest after surgery.

Should I wait till the Cataract is ‘ripe’?
It is a myth that one should wait for the Cataract to ‘ripe’ before considering surgery. A ‘ripe’, or rather an advanced cataract, makes it more difficult to be removed from your eye. Therefore, waiting for the cataract to ripe may result in slower recovery and even unwanted complications.
